Starting this past weekend, the Pacific Northwest has been on high alert for fire risk. A number of factors have contributed to this, primarily a significant heat wave as well as strong winds. Additionally, there has been many moments in which lightning strikes have been on the horizon, which have furthered fire concerns. The worries of the fire are both of existing fires worsening and also more beginning. Currently, there are a number of fires blazing between Oregon and Washington, with over 621,000 acres burned. In both states, over half a million people have been put under red flag warnings starting on Sunday. The National Weather Service advises everyone to stay diligent and prepare for possible evacuation orders.

The warnings specifically mentioned the high heat and low humidity.

One of the biggest concerns amidst this risky weather is the fact that thunderstorms have been hitting the region as well. With possible lightning strikes hitting the very dry areas, fires can spark up easily. Additionally, the wind that spawns from the storm becomes a bigger issue as well, as this helps further the spread of the fires. This is what has caused the fires to span such vast distances and why firefighters have been struggling to contain the fires.

In Washington state alone, there are at least six major fires burning at the moment. One of the fires covers 30,000 acres itself. This is the Pioneer Complex fire. There, grass and wood are burning aplenty in the current weather conditions. This fire has been ongoing for over one month, starting on June 6th. The original causes of this fire are currently being investigated. Nonetheless, the fire puts a neighborhood of over 300 homes at risk. After the month long blaze, only about 14% has been contained.

The state’s firefighting department is spread thin with all of the flames.

The Department of Natural Resources has committed many resources to various fires around the state, which has caused them to struggle to take any down amidst the fire-feeding weather. Oregon is dealing with the same struggles, which is just leaving the Pacific Northwest to seemingly crumble in flames. As these conditions continue and red flag warnings continue to be in effect, local and state authorities continue to advise people to remain cautious and prepared for any outcome.
