GRANITE FALLS, Washington — A deputy shot is being investigated by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. An injured man was armed with a hatchet and other weapons near Granite Falls Monday night.
The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. east of Granite Falls on the Mountain Loop Highway, after a 34-year-old Lynnwood man texted a friend about three hours earlier to say he was suicidal.
That friend called the police, who located the man’s vehicle at a winter road closure gate on the Mountain Loop Highway.
Three Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies responded, and one of the deputies fired multiple times after contacting the man at the scene. The victim was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, but his condition is not available.
The sheriff’s office said their SMART team, made up of multiple agencies, is investigating what happened between responding deputies and the man at the scene. Investigators have already recovered multiple edged weapons at the scene, including a hatchet. Nobody else was hurt in the incident.
The deputy will be placed on administrative leave after he had been with Snohomish County for 18 years. The case remains under investigation.
